Living in Community PDF Print E-mail

The release of the final action plan by the Living In Community steering committee on June 4th at the Vancouver Public Library was a huge success. The event was well attended with over 120 people. The diverse guest speaker panel, and the interesting World Cafe group discussions were very successful at creating further opportunities for interesting and lively dialogue between the various participants.

The steering committee believes the recommendations within the action plan reflect the concerns and ideas that came from the extensive community consultation process they conducted with communities around Vancouver, including the Collingwood BIA, Collingwood Community Policing Centre and the Collingwood Neighbourhood House, and have the potential to dramatically influence the health and safety of all.

The messages that echoed throughout the consultation process demonstrated that the status quo is not acceptable, and that action is urgently needed to increase health and safety for sex workers, residents, businesses, and the entire community and to prevent the sexual exploitation of children and youth.

The steering committee of Living in Community will be working through the fall to put in place the implementation phase of the project.

Carleton School Fence Art Project PDF Print E-mail

In the Fall of 2006, Carleton School students painted over 300 images that represent various modes of travel used by business and residents during the early years of Collingwood.   You'll see Pennyfarthing bicycles, the original Avalon Dairy truck, a typical delivery truck and fire wagon depicted along the school fence on Kingsway.  The Kingsway corridor was part of the Interurban train which ran from the East to the West and stopped at what is now the Joyce-Collingwood Skytrain Station.

The Carleton Fence project is a demonstration of how a community can plan together to develop a lasting legacy and generate community pride in the process. The project was supported by Vancity.

In 2006, the Collingwood BIA launched a new theme; "Historical Collingwood, Gateway Into Vancouver".   The Carleton Fence is a visual reminder of how Collingwood become one of Vancouver's oldest communities.

For more information about the history of Collingwood, we encourage you to read "Collingwood Pioneers - Memories of a Vancouver District", by Barbara Nelson.  It illustrates and captures the stories of  many, and takes you on a wonderful journey back to when Collingwood began.  A copy can be obtained through the BIA Office.

The Collingwood BIA won the first place award for the Carleton School Fence Art project at the Business Improvement Areas of British Columbia (BIABC) annual provincial conference this past May.  The award was won in the category of "Community Projects, Partnerships and Special Events".  There were nine category entries from around the province.  BIA President, Ernie Culley, was on hand to accept the award.

Historical Collingwood at the Clock Tower PDF Print E-mail

Next time you are passing Kingsway and Joyce stop to read a little history of the neighbourhood.

Two new signs have been placed on the fence at this corner.  In addition, the BIA worked with Emerging Hope to clear the bordering planters of overgrowth and weeds and to replant seasonal flowers, shrubs and flowering bushes.  In the coming weeks two self-watering hanging baskets will be installed on the clock tower.

The corner provides an inviting place to sit, relax, and to read up on some local history.

Collingwood carries a long history of transportation and the adjoining fence is a creative demonstration of the many different forms of travel used by Collingwood pioneers.
